Exposed Bindings: Buttonhole

This workshop is aimed at beginners and those with experience of bookbinding who are not familiar with buttonhole stitch. The binding can be produced with rigid covers made of grey board or flexible covers using a lighter weight card. We will make a hard-covered version, which is slightly more complicated. After the workshop participants will know how to make both versions. The dense stitching requires the use of a soft paper, which students have to cut or tear to size manually. This process is quite time consuming but is necessary to achieve a book that celebrates the sewing, but also is more robust because the fore edge and spine have a roughly equal width.
The workshop will start with instruction about the basic principles of book binding before we tear down our pages, make a cover tailored to the size of the book block and sew the pages into the cover. The workshop lasts a day. All materials and lunch are included.
