Exposed Bindings: Blanket Stitch

This workshop is aimed at beginners and those with experience of bookbinding who are not familiar with blanket stitch.  Like coptic, blanket stitch is an unsupported binding with exposed sewing across the spine.  It normally has a rigid cover made of board and decorative paper.   The example above is clearly more of a sculpture than a useable book but it serves to show how pliable the spine can become with unsupported bindings. The binding has the advantage of being able to open flat in a similar manner to a hinge, which makes it a popular choice for sketchbooks.  However, it  is less robust than books with a covered spine such as cased or rounded books.

We normally make a version with hard covers, which looks similar to coptic binding but with a different sewing pattern across the spine. The course lasts half a day and will cover the basic principles of bookbinding before we proceed to make our books.  All materials are supplied.
