Exposed Bindings: Sewn Over Raised Cords or Straps

This workshop is aimed at beginners or those with experience of bookbinding who are not familiar with sewing over raised cords or straps. Sewing over cords or straps can be used to make books with rigid or flexible covers. Raised cords were historically used to make leather-bound books which is why they frequently have ridges or raised bands running horizontally across the spine underneath the leather cover.
We use sewing over straps to make our rounded and backed books, which have hard covers, but the straps can also be woven into lighter weight, more pliable covers to create a decorative feature, which is the approach taken in this workshop. If you want to use this technique with rigid covers, please see our rounded books workshop. All materials and lunch are included in the cost. The workshop takes half a day.
