This workshop seeks to introduce you to setting type, along with printing and registration on a Vandercook SP20 proofing press. The print shop is equipped with full trays of Garamond in 14 and 18 point regular and 14 point italic. Participants can choose to set their favourite song or poem or produce printed pages to be incorporated into a larger book project. Other options include producing a limited edition of your own bespoke stationery, cards or invitations for a special occasion. A variety of decorative wooden ornaments can be set alongside the lead type to add patterns to your prints.
You can also make a poster using wood type and woodblock ornaments to personalise your home. Wood type was a popular medium for the production of posters in the nineteenth century but was supplanted by lithography and digital typesetting in the twentieth century for commercial purposes. However, wood type has a tactile, less uniform quality when printed, which speaks of mechanical production and has significant charm.
Participation in these workshops is limited to two people or groups of up to five people, who are willing to work collaboratively on two products. This is to ensure sufficient press time. Parents should accompany children and be aware that there are sharps in the workshop.
This workshop is aimed at beginners. Participants can choose between a half day workshop, during which they will print one colour, or a whole day, when they can print two colours. All materials, such as inks and paper, are included. Lunch will be provided for those opting for the full day workshop.
